NEWS: Veterans Day Tribute

Let us not forget what today is, because today is a day to honor the bravest Americans, the proudest Americans and the strongest Americans. An American soldier is like no other soldier. An American army is like no other army.

I have been around past and current U.S. soldiers, and I never know what to do. Never know what to say.

As a kid growing up, I didn't understand war or what it meant to be a soldier. I didn't know why my uncle was such a proud man when he tied up his boots and put on his camo uniform. I didn't know why my neighbors were concerned about their son joining the marines.

Now I understand.

To become a soldier is to become something great. When you become a soldier you sacrifice normal ways of life, you sacrifice the relationships of loved ones, you sacrifice your body, you sacrifice your mind and sometimes you sacrifice your life. Every person that becomes a soldier knows this, yet they have the strength and pride to defend this great country.

I will never know what it is like to be on the battlefield, and to be honest I don't want to. Friends die. Fear never sleeps. I will be the first to admit that I don't think I have what it takes to be a soldier.

So when a friend who is in the marines comes home, or when you see a soldier in uniform, what do you say? How can you express your thanks to a person that has more courage than you, a person that is willing to defend you and your rights, a person that is sacrificing so much while you sit at your comfortable home?

To this day, I still don't know what to say to an American soldier. The best that I've come up with is, "Thanks."

POLITICS: Racism in America

In J101 today, we saw iconic images of racism in America only 50 years ago. The focus was "Media spurred the civil rights movement." In a nutshell, whites were in denial of racism in the south until the media started covering it. I'd say overall the majority of people in America believe that there is little to no racism today, but are we missing something? What better test-case than the recent election?

With those two videos in mind from Ohio and Virginia, here is Barry Kay, Associate Professor Wilfrid Laurier, on his thoughts of racism in America and the elections.

NEWS: CNN goes 'Star Trek'

CNN was the choice for election coverage this year, whether it be because of Anderson Cooper's charisma or their cool technological gadgets.

CNN became famous originally for their interactive board that could zoom into states with a single touch, then could pull up elections stats for regions and then quickly back to the national picture to show which states were turning blue or red.

Viewers became fascinated during presidential debates while CNN used undecided voters to create an ongoing reaction bar while the candidates spoke.

Then they topped it all. CNN created something we haven't seen since Star Wars in 1977, an interactive hologram. Using multiple HD cameras, CNN created a live hologram picture of a person and put them in the studio. Check it out:

It serves no purpose besides the fact that it's awesome.

The hologram leaves me with one question: what's next for the 2010 and 2012 elections?

POLITICS: The Facebook reaction to the election

I was happy to hear that Obama won presidency tonight, yet I can't say the same about everyone. One aspect that our media class has focused on is the new technological advancement in media, so I'd like to share with you a collection of Facebook statuses I saw throughout the night:

"Nick is polishing his sniper rifle..."

"Ally is quiting her job, president Obama will take care of me."

"Bobby is bend over america. the terrorists are behind us.. and their pants are down. McCain was the only protection."

"Krista is so disappointed in america's bad decision. atleast when obama's change doesnt come, we can say "i told you so". ireland here i come."

"Kyle is go learn what socialism means...then change your status."

"Katie is our country is about to be a shit show."

"Maya is saying look republicans on fb with ur ignorant statuses we dealt with Bush's ish for 8 years...& now it's OUR TIME..get over yourselves OBAMA 08.'"

"Matt is OBAMA! WE DID IT!"

"Aaron has seen better days."

"Jenn is so excited for America. YES WE CAN!!"

"Sarah is soo moved. YAYY OBAMA :)"

"Eric says John McCain gave a great speech, but Obama will do America well."

"Stephen better see some damn change . . . for the good of america."

"Joey is really happy everyone is giving me some entertainment through these status updates. Keep em comin!!"

"Jaime is not looking forward to becoming a slave!"

"Dan is tentative about Obama... if he ends up touching my 401k or taxing my stock market gains, or rewarding people for being mediocre, i'll be against him."

"Caitlin is moving to australia w/nikki and catie..this country is royally screwed."

"Ashley: I love all the disappointed McCain voters. Real easy to vote for a man when you dnt have to worry about fighting his war."-Current Soldier

"Ronnie is feeling disappointed in his country."

"Alex is so happy right now that America (and OHIO!) finally decided to change from its dracionian ways of the past eight years and elected a true leader. OBAMA!!!!!"

"Amanda is not becoming a doctor thanks to universal healthcare! HOORAY OBAMA"

"Chris is oh well, it won't last long haha."

"Trevor is moving to canada cuz the american dream is over. i dont get why people wanted change and therefor elected a bunch of bullshit."

"Kiley can't believe socialism is the new democracy."

"Alicia is like all things are possible. It's official..BARACK OBAMA '08."

"David is hello socialism."

"Matt is OBAMA won. Get over it. Quit ripping on our new president. If you don't like it then you can get out."

It was a battle of words tonight when Obama was elected. I was entertained by the responses from the Facebook world, and I hope this entertained you. Incase you're wondering what my status read, here it is:

"Aaron is going to put up an election status too. Congrats Obama, go change the world!"

POLITICS: Palin Punk'd

Right before election day, Sarah Palin has reaffirmed my belief that this country needs Obama-Biden. Palin fell victim to a radio show prank when she agreed to speak to the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy. However, to her surprise it wasn't Sarkozy, it was the "Masked Avengers."

This is just a few things the phone conversation touched on:

"The seven-minute conversation touched on topics including politics to hunting by helicopter quoting 'Like we say in French', 'on pourrait tuer des bebe phoques aussi' [translation: We can kill baby seals also], but leaving Dick Cheney behind, as well as Palin's political future. When one of the duo suggested they saw her as President one day, she responded, 'Maybe in eight years.' During the prank, the duo identified Johnny Hallyday as Sarkozy's advisor on American relations, Stef Carse as the Prime Minister of Canada and their Les Cerveaux de l'info co-host Richard Z. Sirois as the 'prime minister' of Quebec. They also referred to the Hustler porn film 'Who's Nailin' Paylin?' as a documentary about Palin, to which the real Palin replied, 'Oh good, thank you.'"

I really hope the nation doesn't elect a politician this ignorant, a politician that thinks it's a good idea to go on SNL to counter its jokes or a politician that would have that phone conversation.

I can't wait to vote tomorrow, a vote against eight more years of stupidity.

Paul Daugherty is using his power to hopefully light a fire under Mike Brown. Someone needs to get to him and explain that the Bengals fans would love a winning team, that he should hire a GM and expand the scouting staff so that we don't waste six years of first round picks (the last successful pick was Carson...Rivers is still a question mark).

You'd be amazed by how many costumes in Athens were Bengals fans with bags over their faces.

POLITICS: Obama Infomercial 10/29

Here's the famous infomercial that Obama aired yesterday, October 29th. It was a commercial that accomplished its goal, provide stories that normal Americans can relate to, showed a humanistic side of Obama and got people talking.

Many news reports question the infomercial, mainly because it was seen as a "presidential-address" before Obama has become presidential. Others argue that the news channels should have disallowed the commercial to air, because it provided a bias 30 minute block and was not necessarily "news-worthy."

Despite the reactions, the infomercial had the highest TV ratings that night, and for a mere cost of $7 million per network, could've swayed key voters.

Here's the video in four different sequences (only way for it to be on youtube).

What do you think of it?

NEWS: Darfur in 10 Minutes with a little bit of China

Ok, now Blgoger will let me type..

The conflict in Sudan and Darfur is not new news, but it is something that not everyone fully understands. I might be breaking one of the golden rules of news writing (news has to be new), but that's fine because for today I want to make sure people understand what is going on in Sudan.

This ten minute video clip does an amazing job explaining the complexity of the conflict, along with exposing one of the most unknown factors, China.

China is still considered a "developing nation." Their industry is growing exponentially, as is the need for oil. One of the larger untapped oil areas is Africa, which some countries are now exploiting due to Africa's general lack of infrastructure.

China trading with countries for oil is not necessarily evil; however, the political actions to ensure these ties with trading nations is a moral failure.

It has been proven that China sends modern weapons to Northern Sudan, which has been fuel for the fire. Because Northern Sudan controls the oil ports, China has given an unfair advantage to half the country with better weapons, thus putting more tools for murder in the hands of those committing genocide.

This is not the only example of China's moral lapse. The government also made close ties with Robert Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe. They gave him money and power, both of which enabled him to steal food and lives from those who did not agree with him politically.

Why isn't anything being done?
The answer is simple-China. The UN can't possible do anything because China has a seat on the security council and will always exercise their veto power. The U.S. won't do anything because it will anger China, as it will be perceived as the U.S. encroaching on China's territory. And for now, no other leaders are stepping up to take genuine action.

In the end, many see no end. The common consensus to the current conflict is that it will take the goodwill of a nation, or many nations to realize the injustice occurring.

ENTERTAINMENT: The art of the remix: Two Times Tuesday

The remix has always been an interesting aspect of music. No matter the genre, song or artist, a remix is a way for music to be reinterpreted.

Since it's Tuesday, and Dominos has everyone thinking of "Two Times Tuesday", I figured I'd double up the music today.

Gnarls Barkley, a two man band from Atlanta most known for their hit single "Crazy", has done their fair share of remixes. Their most famous was "Gone Daddy Gone", which happened to be their second hit single. The other remix, "Reckoner", has not been produced but has been seen by many loyal audiences.

Fans were able to witness "Reckoner" while at Lollapalooza, when Gnarls Barkley took the stage a day after Radiohead (the original song's writer).

Gnarls Barkley, who is funky in their own respects, has taken hit songs from other alternative bands and put the Gnarls spin on things. A remix isn't easy to do, mainly because listeners are already used to the original song. Despite that difficulty, they have repeatedly succeeded in making remixes, and for me have taken the songs to new levels.

Enjoy today's for your viewing pleasure, Gnarls Barkley, and their own spins on the remix.

NEWS: Gas Price Manipulation by Elections

While in college, my mom has started a tradition of a daily random text. Its been our way of keeping in touch, and sometimes informed. A few days ago I received a text that said, "Gas 1.99!"

1.99?! Before I left for college, just two months ago, I was paying around four dollars a gallon.

It makes no sense how gas prices can drop that quickly, that low, for no reason. In 2006, my social studies teacher proposed a gas price theory, that the elections were making the gas prices drop. At the time, I thought he forgot to take his meds and labeled the thought as just another conspiracy theory.

However, in a crucial election such as this, the gas price drop has been so apparent that it makes me wonder if "Crazy O'Connor" was onto something.

Admittedly, I have no evidence to prove this, nor has anyone been able to explain its feasibility. However, no one has been able to prove this wrong or give an alternate theory . To be honest, I think people are so happy with the current prices that they don't want to ask questions, thus the lack of answers.

So I leave it to the only thing I found on the internet. John Zavaglia, a local news producer from Massachusetts, puts his own spin on the gas theory and presents evidence to back up the "conspiracy theory." It's a nine minute clip of two segments from his show, but I encourage you to take the time to watch all of it. It's something that Americans should be thinking about.

ENTERTAINMENT: The Black Keys for your viewing pleasure

This song isn't new by any means, but it came up on shuffle today. It has that certain freshness from the shuffle, the freshness of a song that went buried in my iTunes, but managed to resurface to my ears by the musical god of luck. Today's viewing pleasure is The Black Keys performing "Your Touch."

The Black Keys are two men, that like to have fun, have attitude and make good music. I got to see them at Lollapalooza, and I'd put them in my top five performances from the three day music festival. They have good stage presence, mainly because they know how to have fun.

This video is quite a bit random, but so be it. It's a good song, so enjoy.

POLITICS: A new kind of ad

Maybe, just maybe, politicians are listening to the American people. This is an example of a well-rounded political ad. It explains the candidate's policies, makes you think and doesn't make an attempt to bash the other candidate.

Americans are tired of the vague "he said she said" ads, while no one explains their own policies and what they would like to do for this country.

SPORTS: The boldest prediction of them all

BOLD PREDICTION:

The Tennessee Titans will remain undefeated this weekend, as they square off against the Colts. Indy just hasn't been the same this year. It's just what happens in the NFL, the balance of power/talent shifts. The Colts are now stepping down from their AFC South thrown, and Tennessee is ready to reclaim the division and possibly get that covenant Super Bowl trophy. Too bad Eddie George is retired; I loved the Titans in the McNair-George days... they did come one yard away from winning the Super Bowl.

BOLDER PREDICTION:

The Bengals will WIN this weekend. They are playing a 2-4 Texans team that is pretty bad on defense. I expect, what now is unexpected, that the Bengals' offense will actual click and make big plays. Hopefully the defense can make huge stands, or at least one stand to allow our offense to take over. Hint: Lets not give the ball to Perry who, for the past couple of years has suffered from various injuries and fumble-itus.

THE BOLDEST PREDICTION OF THEM ALL:

The Bengals will, in the next three weeks, not lose a game..
Oh yeah, Rivers is out, Palmer is out, Jacksonville is after Houston... and we have a bye week 10.

I like my odds.

Empower Success: $15,000

It's a little late, but at our PR meeting on Tuesday we found out that the estimated total raised by the 5K Run to Empower was $15,000! Thank you to all who helped the cause.

Empower also has created a new promotional video for your viewing pleasure.

Next on the agenda:

Empower is hoping to become a national organization. It has rapidly gained excitement this year, as other Ohio colleges are creating empower chapters at their own campuses. They are hoping to expand to other cities, and are also interested in high school involvement.

Already this year empower has grown enough that they have been backordered on jewelry; however, due to the amount of money raised by the 5k, the OU chapter will buy enough jewelry to hopefully cover the growing interest.

If interested in starting a chapter at your local school, church, community, organization or university, let me know and I'll assist you in spreading this great cause.

ENTERTAINMENT: 3OH!3

Music is a drug.

I sat out in the mod of our dorm and listened to a song (later it turned out to be "choke chain"), and I could not get it out of my head. Funny how addicting music can be.

Anyway, it was a great song to get hyped to. If you're trying to stay awake while studying for an exam, or getting ready to find your first win in flag football, 3OH!3 is the way to go.

I warn you, this music is different. It's unorganized, and shows little reflection of musical talent. The music is like the random party lifestyle this band is becoming famous for. Yet, the random sounds, screams and lyrics are sharp enough to dig into your brain and not let go.

3OH!3 is what happens when you mix alcohol, two white guys, electronic hip hop beats and Bolder, Colorado. Sound delicious?

Here's 3OH!3's music video for "Holler Till You Pass Out." (Sorry, there aren't any other video options for 3OH!3 that are actual videos)

POLITICS: Youth Vote 2008

The 2008 election has been shaped to be a benchmark in American history no matter who becomes president. News reports have indicated Obama having slight leads, while the same poles also show Obama has over a twenty point lead on McCain for voters under 30.

Historically, the youth vote has been more liberal. At the same time it has been weaker due to poor attendance on election day. I began to think how my political views, which are liberal were formed.

To keep a long story short, I didn't really know what politics were until my freshman year of high school. I remember the days of the 2000 election at Springdale Elementary, talking about Bush and Gore, but I was always ignorant to politics.

As a person who became drawn into politics during the Bush administration, I was exposed to many ups and downs. I would've aligned myself more with the GOP earlier on, when patriotism was high and we were out to fight terrorism (I was also very ignorant to the price of war, and what it means to lose a soldier).

However, as I became more aware and read into politics, I found myself to agree with the more liberal stances. I couldn't agree with Bush or many of the GOP's ideals. I tell this story not to bore you with my views, but to show why many people (especially young voters) will vote for Obama this year.

Americans are fed up with Bush, with the war, with dumb policy making, with the game of politics and ultimately with Washington. Politics can always be described as the lesser of two evils, but I think America is starting to align themselves with a fresh face that wants us out of Iraq.

NEWS: Joe the plumber-Joe Wurzelbacher

John McCain referred to "Joe the Plumber" at least two dozen times to attack Obama in last night's presidential debate. It's time to meet Joe.

According to NY Times:
Joe is not a licensed plumber
Joe registered to vote in March (the primary), and voted Republican. (He's 34)
Joe's claim to having a $250K business is not true, he gross receipts $250K and would still be eligible for an Obama tax cut.

Overnight Joe Wurzelbacher became a celebrity. He said he feels like "Britney Spears" now. I just have on question for Joe...

Since you're so concerned with the American dream, why won't you put aside your greed for the better of this country, and allow the upper class Americans to be taxed more than the middle class, or lower class?

That way the middle class can pay for college, get a chance to own a house and have the potential to prosper. You go enjoy your $250,000 paycheck while the rest of the U.S. experiences hardship due to the greed in America, and the stupidity of our government.

One last comment: I highly doubt Joe the plumber will buy his company, make his $250,000 and live in the same $90,000 house he resides in now. Something about that man seems less truthful than the actual politicians (it could be that he gave the wrong name originally-and spelled it with an o).

NEWS: Squirrel starts California fire

Headlines are meant to draw in readers' attention so that they will go on to the read the rest of the story. Sometimes a headline will turnoff a reader, make them think or simply make them go hmm..

For example: Flaming squirrel to blame for Californian fire

Hmm.. (Bet you'll keep reading)

The Associated Press reported, "With southern California fighting wind-driven flames and spot fires breaking out across northern California, firefighters have fingered at least one arsonist: an unlucky squirrel.

Redding firefighters say the squirrel set off the blaze when it shorted out a power line, caught fire and dropped into dry vegetation."

I bet you Darwin would have something to say about that squirrel.

POLITICS: Video games new battleground for ads

Obama broke new ground today, as he became the first presidential candidate to advertise in a video game. The ad appears in Burnout: Paradise City when the Xbox 360 system is connected to the internet.

The ad is in the form of a billboard while the player is racing. It will appear in games until November 3, in ten states. The states, Ohio, Florida, Iowa, Colorado, Indiana, Montana, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada and Wisconsin are considered this year's battleground states.

The ads were purchased through Microsoft (Xbox), which offered McCain equal ad space. Neither candidate accepted ad offers from Sony (Playstation 3).

What's next for ads? Cell phone companies selling ads that will text all users..

This is a new age of technology, and now presidential candidates are catching up to all of its benefits. It should be interesting to see where presidential candidates will go next for ads.

NEWS: Gay marriage legalized

The Connecticut Supreme Court ruled (4-3) that marriage can be between people of the same sex. This makes Connecticut the third state to allow gay marriage, joining California and Massachusetts.

In the times of turmoil that the U.S. is experiencing, it's nice to see our government work. This ruling is not just progressive law, but also an example of why our founding fathers gave states their power.

The best example is California. Not only did it legalize gay marriage, but also medical marijuana and has created its own emission standards. While a single state seems to lead in progressive policy, the United States as a whole seems to be a country stuck in its 20th and 19th century law, and hasn't evolved with its people.

There are plenty of laws I'd like to change, and that a majority of people in the U.S. would change. While the federal government reflects its age, state governments with populations that demand change are making new laws that are setting the tone for America.

Each new state law or ruling is one small step, but it sets a precedent that the federal government can use. As more states come together on a cause and change their laws, the federal government will also be forced to change.

POLITICS: The rising tide

Found this interesting.. I got an email from my dad today, who had thought for a while he'd be voting for McCain. Doesn't seem that way anymore.

"My choice has been made, I cannot vote for a man who would make a tremendously bad decision for a running mate. I have watched George Bush make one poor decision after another, and have been worried that we will stay the course until the end of time. I think McCain will do the same.

There are many points that I cannot agree on with Obama, but I can counter many of those single issues with voting for like minded people in the legislature as myself. But my vote for president must be for Barack. I feel that he will be presidential and set the tone for the country when a crises such as the flooding of New Orleans happens again. I think that when he makes a decision based on finding weapons of mass destruction, and finds differently he will then figure out it is time to bring our young men and women home.

I have complete confidence that our country will, in a landslide vote Barack into office. Now I need to figure a way to move up the inauguration date to mid November."

POLITICS: Discussion on the war

Bill O'Reilly is usually a loud, interrupting patriot who seeks answers "for Americans" on his political show. I haven't been able to sit and watch the show for more than two minutes, mainly because O'Reilly is the only one being heard, while he screams about wanting the answers he and "Americans" deserve.

It's always interesting when O'Reilly is off his own show, because his opponent actually gets a chance to talk. Letterman and O'Reilly had a great discussion about the war, discussing both "withdraw" and "stay the course." And no, O'Reilly didn't automatically look correct because he was the loudest, but he was put in his place by Letterman.

"You're putting words in my mouth, just like you're putting artificial facts inside your head."

ENTERTAINMENT: Lil Wayne on top of the world

Lil Wayne exploded on the music charts with the release of the Carter III. He has grown from the "Go DJ" days, becoming more and more famous for his catchy freestyles. He is everywhere now.

If you listen to the radio for an hour, odds are Lil Wayne will be on for at least 30 minutes (if you're on the right stations). Music artists reach out just to put his name on their song. Whenever a song has "ft. Lil Wayne" on it, people listen. It rises on the charts. It explodes.

He's done it again, this time teaming up with Kevin Rudolf in a not so familiar role. Their song, "Let it Rock" isn't the gansta type rap or edgey free-style most are used to hearing from Lil Wayne, yet it's still another radio hit in my book.

SPORTS: Go Rays!

Since I don't have a baseball team to root for (Cincinnati sports theme...), I'm hopping on the Rays' bandwagon.

This is a team that has suffered many years of defeat, playing in a near impossible division. They've been Goliath as the Yankees and Red Sox put hundreds of millions into their rosters. This team is one of the lowest paid in the MLB, but are now in the division championship.

They give me hope that one year the Reds will bust out and reach the playoffs again. The Rays last year were sitting in last place, again. With the inspired play from young players such as Longoria and Iwamura, this team plays with a swagger that is entertaining.

The 2008 season was crazy for the Rays, starting with spring training brawls, then reaching a franchise record for wins and now playing in the division championship.

This year has taught us that the gloves will come out in a Rays-Red Sox showdown. Heated emotions, passion and the hunger for victory will make for great baseball.

Go Rays!

POLITICS: Tina Fey making sense of Palin

I didn't originally want to post SNL clips of Sarah Palin, mainly because I was scared of the truth coming out of Sar...I mean Tina Fey's mouth. After the debate, not one media outlet outright criticized her performance. It was easier to find media outlets praising her "surprisingly good" performance than criticism.

As I watched the debate I noticed the constant "maverick" and the awkward blink to America. Yet when I went to read the papers, no one even made note of it. I guarantee you if Obama or McCain attempted multiple sexy winks to America, they would be eaten alive (or called a pedophile).

Anyway to the SNL part... SNL has been about the only place that has pointed out any of this. So far, SNL has done such a good job pointing out her flaws and shaky policy discussion, that I tend to agree with them more than CNN.

So I leave you with how I saw the VP debate see video above (Note: They do a great job of Biden's, "I heart McCain"), and with this thought: Only vote McCain-Palin in if you want SNL to be funny again, or you want Tina Fey to be the largest celebrity in America.

SPORTS: The mighty fall harder-Kimbo Slice

Tonight's fight between Kimbo Slice and local fighter Seth (The Silverback) Petruzelli was set up to be a modern day Rocky story.

The fight originally was set for Kimbo Slice to face off against Ken Shamrock. However, due to an injury during his warmup, Shamrock was unable to compete. So in came The Silverback, not knowing he was going to fight Kimbo earlier that day.

Seth got the chance of a lifetime, fighting the most hyped fighter today. I sat at the edge of my seat waiting to watch Kimbo beat some no-name up.

The Silverback backed into his corner as Kimbo came on the aggressive. Then, with one hit to the face Kimbo hit the floor.

Thirteen seconds in, The Silverback had knocked Kimbo Slice to the canvas with multiple blows to the head.

Kimbo Slice fell from his hyped podium. He fell hard. In the post-fight interview all he said was, "It's all good. The after party is still on."

So in the end, Kimbo is off to party and Seth Petruzelli is cashing in a check.

POLITICS: VP showdown (smack down) pt. 2

Economy:
Biden- This was close, basically a tie. Neither have a plan to solve the funk our country is in. I give Biden the win by exposing McCain's votes to support Wall Street greed. He also cited the quotes of McCain stating the economy is strong, then two hours later realizing his comments stated that we are in crisis. That uncertainty of our economy is too much of a risk.

Environment:
Palin- I believe Palin really showed that she can use her experience and solve the environment better. I didn't know she was the first governor to establish a climate change cabinet. She also got Biden to concede that she has done a good job fighting off oil companies in Alaska.

Iraq:
Biden- This is a clear win. CLEAR. Biden pointed out that McCain has no withdraw plan, that he and Obama's plan is a clear 16 month withdraw. This left Palin with an awkward pause only to say, "That plan is a white flag of surrender." The days of war hungry patriots is over, we want our soldiers home from Iraq ASAP.

Pakistan/Iran:
Biden- Palin's foreign policy became exposed. She only recited a 6th grade definition of the conflict in Iran. Biden won that Pakistan can be solved with diplomacy, that the war on terrorism is better solved in Pakistan and that they have nuclear weapons now.

Genocide:
Biden- Many will disagree on this point. I think genocide needs acted upon, and that U.S. action can help. Honestly, this shouldn't be a U.S. effort but a world effort. However, due to China's seat on the UN Security Council, world action has been denied. This is when morals cross political lines, and that some action should be taken. It's too bad American boots are stuck in Iraq.

Conclusion:
Despite Palin's attempts to sympathize with middle class America saying she still is apart of the middle class and her consistent winking, I give the win to Biden. I felt Palin stuck to her note cards, constantly referring to 'the maverick' and repeating 'heck' over and over again. Biden turned up the heat at the end responding to 'the maverick' claims, throwing McCain under the bus with all of his former proposals. Obviously, it was not the smack down as promised. However, I and others I have talked to are left with the impression that she is too ignorant to be a VP and that the Obama-Biden ticket is the most appealing vote for 2008.

POLITICS: VP showdown (smack down) pt. 1

The VP debate is tonight at 8 P.M. Tonight is the night that the GOP regrets their VP candidate, that they wish their VP was someone with actual experience. Tonight is the night that the Palin effect comes to an end, and the night that Biden's name becomes known.

The Washington Post wrote an article about how Biden had no effect on voters, and that no one knew who he was or his policies. Peculiarly, after the Republican convention, Palin put McCain ahead in poles and no one had even heard the name Palin (besides those who live in Alaska).

The Palin effect will come to an end. The hype of having a woman vice president will be buried by the realization that she would be a terrible choice to lead a country. She has ZERO foreign affairs experience (no matter how close Russia is), has MINIMAL knowledge of laws, and I doubt she could really be the best choice for America.

McCain has already announced that Palin would be in charge of things such as the environmental policy. Placing anything that important into the hands of a Washington rookie is just asking for a mess.

Tonight is the night for change. The media believes Biden will "look too good" next to Palin, and will come off as aggressive...

I don't care how aggressive he'll look. He should shine as much as possible, defeat Palin and make the GOP bury their heads into their hands, shaking their heads in agony. The Obama-Biden ticket should pull away in the polls even more once the debate concludes tonight, while the march towards the White House continues.

NEWS: Ohio does even more to embarrass drunk drivers

Ohio has become a leader in embarrassing drunk drivers. It first instituted a law that forced drivers with multiple DUIs to buy a special yellow and red plate, that actually stands out pretty well in traffic.

On Tuesday, it passed legislation that made an online database of drunk drivers mandatory by the end of this year. The database will be sorted by the name, address or birthday for those who are convicted of driving drunk five times over a twenty year period.

The Columbus Dispatch interviewed Scott Woodworth, 49 who is serving time in jail for his thirteenth drunk driving conviction. Woodworth supported the legislation saying, "People deserve to know who is a drunk around them."

Agreed. This really won't do anything to make me feel safer, but it may still deter people from repeatedly driving drunk. I supported the yellow plates simply because people can tell on the road who is a drunk driver, however I'm not sure this database will have as close of an impact. Still, those people who are dumb enough to drive drunk multiple times should be punished somehow (Scott Woodworth, remember has 13 drunk driving convictions, is only serving a five year sentence).

ENTERTAINMENT: Springsteen to perform at Super Bowl thanks to Janet Jackson

I write this not to offend Bruce Springsteen, or any of his fans. Congrats on being this year's Super Bowl half time show Bruce. Shame on you NFL.

Janet Jackson has ruined Super Bowl entrainment forever. Ever since her nipple flash (which no one wanted to see anyway) in Houston, the Super Bowl has had a snore-fest of a half time. All the names that have played are big names, who make great music, but are terrible choices for a half time show.

The Rolling Stones
Paul McCartney
Prince
Tom Petty

If they weren't musicians, they'd most likely be playing bingo at a local retirement home. I can understand that the NFL wants to be cautionary after Jackson's "malfunction", but this is too extreme.

If you went around the NFL and asked players what they listen to before a game, I doubt any would say Paul McCartney or Prince. They listen to rap or rock, music that will hype them up.

Football is a contact sport, that fans enjoy getting their adrenaline pumping for. When you put on  a show with a man and a piano, you might want to go to bed rather than knock someone out of their shoes.

The NFL needs to reconsider its half time show stance, and start putting on acts that will make the players and fans pumped for the second half. I doubt bands like Foo Fighters, or rappers like Kanye West will expose themselves or rip off a girl's shirt. They should wisely choose a band, or performer that will put on a worthy show without the producers sweating over the phone directly connected to the FCC.

SPORTS: Matt Bryant wins game despite death of son

The NFL has been full of feel-good stories, but none are as touching as Matt Bryant's. Bryant, Tampa Bay Buccaneers' place kicker made three FGs today in route to a 30-21 win against Green Bay.

Bryant's three month old son died Wednesday. He missed practice the rest of the week, and head coach Jon Gruden left the decision of playing today up to Bryant.

Playing a game of football usually is the last thing most people want to do after losing a son. Football is a mental sport, especially at the kicker position. Coaches will attempt to freeze kickers to get into their head before a kick. Bryant took the field in front of 65,000 and kicked a game winning field goal knowing he had just lost his son.

Not enough can be said about what Bryant did. He won't gain the publicity Brett Favre did after losing his father, but he surely deserves it. Losing a son is a difficult. Losing a son and going to work four days later is noble. Losing a son and kicking a game winning field goal, well I just don't have words to describe that.

Its hard to think of NFL players as real people sometimes. That they can feel the same pain we have. That their lives aren't picture perfect. Watching Bryant kick today, point to the sky after every field goal and hearing the support of 55 players alongside 65,000 fans was touching. It reminds us that a community can come together to support someone in need, and that sports are more than wins and losses.

NEWS: Russian Rebound

Russia has flexed its military muscle in front of the U.S., as they gave Venezuela $1 billion in military loans.

Venezuela is famous for Hugo Chavez's declared stance against the West. Just two years ago Chavez spoke after President Bush at the U.N. and called him the devil, stating that the podium still smells like sulfur.

Russia's agreement came right after the announcement that by 2020 they will rebuild their fleet of warships, and will construct new nuclear-capable submarines. Also promised, and already seen is an unspecified space program.

Russia hopes to behave like a, "world power." Venezuela became part of the equation when the two nations noted their similar anti-west sentiments.

Russia has been upset since the recent Georgian conflict, when the West "intervened" in the conflict. Venezuela then went on record that the two will team up as a "colossus being born."

Russia said the United States shouldn't feel threatened, and that they only aspire to have a permanent combat readiness. Said Medvedev, "We should seek superiority."

I'm not trying to make you fearful of World War III, or Cold War Part 2 but the U.S. should start watching out. The West (especially America) has a growing resentment, and if a power like Russia starts pouring enough fuel on the fire, the flames may become powerful enough to engulf the fifty states.

POLITICS: It's on

THE DEBATE: Round 1 Foreign Policy & National Security

McCain: 72 years old. AZ Senator (R)

Strengths- National Security is his knockout punch. Serving in the army and former POW, McCain knows he has the edge on national security issues. In a time of terrorism and war, he hopes to win over voters with his war experiences and tactics.
Weaknesses- The perception of his age has hurt McCain in some respects. Many believe he is representative of yesterday's policies, not tomorrow's hopes. Also, the ties to Bush and the Iraq War may backfire on his war experience.

vs.

Obama: 47 years old. IL Senator (D)

Strengths- Charisma has attached his face to hope and change. His former law background has given him the smarts to speak of foreign and domestic policies. The knockout punch will be that he voted against the war, and that he represents new politics of foreign policy rather than hardline war policies.
Weaknesses- Inexperience. Obama hasn't been able to articulate plans to create change and has struggled in former debates. Obama has no national security experience, which will surely be an easy target for McCain.

UPDATE: McCain will participate in the debate.  The debate will start at 9:00 P.M.

POLITICS: Tentative Agreement on $700 Billion Bailout

Was anyone aware that Congress was putting on the concert of the year? Check out the set list:

Wake Up Call-Maroon 5
Congress takes the wake up call that our country is in trouble, that something needs to be done as the economy is slowly collapsing before our own eyes.

Free Bird-Lynyrd Skynyrd
Its the government, they were elected by the people-so they can do whatever they want. Free to spend the people's money and come up with the "best" solution for the country.

Got Money-Lil Wayne
"If you got money, and you know it, take it out your pocket and show it." Well apparently we have $700 billion. Why not show it?

Oops I did it again-Brittany Spears
A rushed decision by the government, sound familiar? Iraq. Patriot Act. Is it third time's a charm? or strike three you're out?!

Well if you don't make it out for the concert, just be aware that a $700 billion dollar plan is about to be passed by Congress to buy frozen stock that is "clogging" our economy. I sure hope the government has it right this time.

$700 billion is nothing to mess with. $250 billion would be available to spend immediately, with $100 billion more left in Bush's discretion. The rest would be slowly dispersed if necessary.

Maybe I should get my passport before the lines get too long...

POLITICS: Debate on Friday

This is an announcement for the presidential debate on Friday. WATCH IT! I'm not going to tell you who to vote for, just make sure you vote. This election is pivotal, our country is struggling and it needs a change, whether it be McCain or Obama.

Make sure you listen for the candidates' stances on the important issues.

The war- The Iraq War has dragged on six years since it was declared, "Mission Accomplished." The U.S. is fed up sacrificing its own young citizens to fight a war that we possibly should've avoided. A withdraw will help the U.S. save lives and tax dollars (war is really, really expensive)

The economy- Some economic analysts are calling Wall Street "dead." Our country needs an effective (not fast and ill-thought) plan to re-stabilize the economy and help those Americans that are losing their jobs due in part to the recession.

The environment- I've come to learn from my POLS 150 that so much can be done, and that the U.S. has simply refused to do anything for the fear of a "weakened" economy. Its about time the U.S. steps up and at least signs the Kyoto Protocol (the U.S. is the only developed country not to sign). It may even help the economy since Americans seem to be buying foreign cars with better gas mileage. Not to mention, we could all use cleaner air.

Change- This is a big one. Obama especially needs to step up and explain how he will actually change this country. Reading through papers and doing research I have found some of his actual proposals, however general America still does not know how he wants to change (and I still don't know much about his ideas for change). McCain needs to prove how he will change the White House from the Bush Administration. Early on, McCain had attracted a huge population of Democrats and Republicans. However, in the past year through his campaigning, McCain has lost many votes because of the closeness to Bush type policy. Statements such as , "I know a lot less about economics...I still need to be educated," have been damaging. He needs to show the leadership and charisma for change in America.

This election needs as many informed voters as it can get. Be a good citizen, use your power to vote and make a smart decision.

NEWS: Ohio Casinos

OHIO

Developers in Ohio are planning to construct a $600 million casino. Currently, Ohio law does not permit gambling despite many recent ballot attempts to overturn current legislation.

The twist. Indiana's three casinos have attracted many Ohio gamblers for that past years. Argosy Casino specifically has taken an extreme stance against the potential Ohio vote to legalize gambling.

Argosy Casino's owner Penn National in Pennsylvania, has stated that they will be launching a $35 million ad campaign against the upcoming vote.

MyOhioNow.org is urging voters not to believe the misleading campaign that the legislation would only allow the one casino in Wilmington. The problem at hand is that Penn National can outspend MyOhioNow on their campaign. Ah, the power of money.

Argosy reports that 50% of their profits come from Ohio, and that passing legislation would severely damage their casino.

If Ohio is losing tax dollars now to its neighbor states because of 'immoral' gambling, then it makes no sense why no to allow gambling in Ohio. If the Ohio residents are going to gamble anyway, the state might as well benefit from its people. In a time where Ohio desperately is attempting to maintain a budget, and is struggling to do so, then it makes plenty of sense to allow gambling as an extra source of revenue. Not to mention the casino will employ more than 5,000 people and create a revenue to all 88 Ohio counties.

emPOWER You can make a difference too

The night before I left for college, I sat in my friend's kitchen shooting the breeze for the last time until I'd see him again on winter break. Our families have gotten close through the years, and we've each been adopted into the families.

During conversation, his mom walks in to send her farewells to me and wishes me the best of luck in Athens. I was left with a piece of advice. "You're above average." Ok, the real advice I left with was, "You both are special people and I want to see you guys make a difference in the world."

So, two weeks later I moved into the wonderful city of Athens, and began the next chapter in my journalistic career. I had applied to Scripps hoping to be a journalist focusing on political and international issues, but had changed my mind to focus on public relations (PR as the journies call it). I joined ImPRession, Ohio University's own public relations firm. (Ranked 1st in the nation, most notable client is Bob Evans)

Now to today's story. Of the organizations we could represent I chose emPOWER, a non-profit organization offering assistance to Africa. I got my e-mail confirmation today that I would be working with emPOWER and help represent them to spread the word of their cause.

Its funny how things come full circle. Looks like I may be able to make a difference after all, while working with international issues and become a determined PR student. It just all happened a lot quicker than expected. So I leave you with an informational video about emPOWER, and remind all that you too can make a difference in this world. You just have to try.

SPORTS: Sportscenter will have plenty to talk about today

-RYDER CUP-

After nine years, the United States has finally won back the Ryder Cup from the Europeans. For those that don't know, the Ryder Cup is a golf tournament set up as a Europe vs. U.S. match. It is played every two years*, and the U.S.'s last win was in 1999.

As a young golfer, I never saw the United States win. I have great pride in my country, especially in events such as the Olympics, Ryder Cup, etc. I am ecstatic to see the United States take its claim as best in the world again.

The United States team managed to pull off the victory without the greatest golfer of all time, Tiger Woods. Woods has been out with an injured knee that he suffered while winning the U.S. Open.

Going into the tournament I gave the Tiger-less United States a slim chance to win. However, they managed a convincing victory over Europe 16.5 to 11.5 improving their overall Ryder Cup record to 25-10-2.

*the 2001 Ryder Cup was delayed due to the 9/11 attacks

-YANKEES-

The boys in pinstripes won't be playing in October this year, and today's game against the Baltimore Orioles marks the final game ever to be played in Yankee Stadium.

Media outlets across the U.S. have been providing viewers with packages showing 85 years' worth of memories. Clips of DiMaggio, Ruth, Jeter and Mantle. Memories of rock concerts, the pope and boxing matches. The clip of the first NFL game to go into overtime that was played in Yankee Stadium. Clips of fans trying to find their normal life again after the 9/11 attacks.

The House that Ruth built will be torn down, along with its memories. The greats will live on. The clips will remain in storage. The fans will reflect on all the games. When its all said and done, come next spring the Yankees will be playing in a new state of the art stadium, attempting to match the accomplishments held in the old Yankee Stadium.

-The Bengals-

Yes, the Bengals lost yet again. They made it to overtime, but with what appeared to be a lack of urgency the offense ran two runs and an incomplete pass. It appears nothing can go right for this team now, even though the offense was repeatedly called the "old Bengals offense we're used to" by the announcers.

I hope we can manage a ten game win streak, or pull of a miracle playoff birth. I'm not going to maintain my expectations for the season because I can't afford to be continually let down. Maybe we should just hope for the first draft pick, and scream 'Who Dey!' next year.

NEWS: 65,000 without power

OHIO

65,000 people are still left powerless in Ohio. Energy companies and the government are scrambling to restore power to everyone in Ohio after a massive wind storm left many families without power.

For three days, my family was left without power. The only contact I had was to reach them on their cell phones. They managed to wait out the three days without power, but there are plenty of other families going on an entire week without power.

Just imagine what life is like without power.

No school (about the only plus)
No phone (except a cell which only lasts as long as its charge)
No food (maybe chips, but you can't last long on just those)
No warm water (why even shower?)
No TV (un-american)
No news (better hope you're on a paper route)
No reading this blog (WHATEVER WILL YOU DO?!?!)

Life wouldn't be a ton of fun...

NEWS: Strickland orders more budget cuts

COLUMBUS

Governor Ted Strickland has ordered a $540 million budget cut in response to the terrible U.S. economy. During an interview, Strickland seemed genuinely concerned about Ohio's economy as well as the budget.

"While it may be raining now," Strickland said in an interview with Jeff Bell. "I fear a much larger storm is looming ahead of us."

Strickland believes Ohio is one of 29 states that are projected to face continual budget cuts. He wrote to President Bush asking that Washington does something in response for the states that are being damaged by the overall economy drop off.

-What this means for us-

Though massive cuts are being made, Strickland promised that the money toward tax reduction for seniors, children's health care, college tuition freeze and funding for local schools would be untouched.

I was not aware, and still am not of a college tuition freeze or the continual increase for school funding. When Strickland ran for governor, his cornerstone was education. Admittedly, I have been outraged at Strickland because the cost of college went up thousands of dollars before my freshman year at Ohio University and I saw my high school still making pointless budget cuts due to a shortage of funding.

I promise to write an update when my second year of college bills begins, and we'll see if he holds to his word. Being smart about the budget is a necessity in this country, especially in these difficult times. Education should be the number one priority, always.

Students should not be forced to scrape their way through college, and parents shouldn't have to stress over $20,000 in-state tuition. Schools should be able to have paper supply rooms with actual paper and pens in them.

If Strickland can keep to his word, uphold education in Ohio and keep it away from the budget chopping block, than I may have to reconsider my anti-Strickland stance. Thats a big IF.

NEWS: Mugabe delays new government

ZIMBABWE

Many people aren't educated on the current conflicts in Africa, especially the Zimbabwean genocide. With the Rwanda (Sudan) genocide getting most of the press coverage, other atrocities get covered up and go almost unnoticed.

Robert Mugabe, currently Zimbabwe's president, has been voted out of office. Zimbabwe elected a new government and have been making strides to put the new one in place. However, Mugabe continually delays the process because he still holds unbelievable power.

The reason why someone should care is simple, Mugabe in his 28 years of control has killed millions of people. He accumulated so much power that he was able to control food in the country. He would keep food from opponents and other people that displeased him, and ultimately killed millions of people by starving them to death.

Connecting back with the Rwandan genocide, one of the main reasons Mugabe was allowed this power and control was China. China is a major contributor to African nations and works on a strictly oil basis. This means that Chinese funds have been fueling nations to buy more guns for genocide, or in Mugabe's case more funds for power to eliminate opponents.

Once Mugabe was finally eliminated from power earlier this year, many Africans saw it as one less evil regime ruling over the people. However, within the new Zimbabwean government will be obvious fragility.

As seen already, Mugabe is still delaying the process and even is demanding that he should have the power to choose the new cabinet. If Mugabe is allowed to continually disrupt the process toward a new government, then no change will occur in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe should be a lesson. Though it is not the most publicized nation in conflict, Zimbabwe can be a stepping stone for the rest of the African nations. The world can assist Zimbabwe by disallowing Mugabe's continual interruptions. This will allow for a peaceful establishment of a new government, one created and elected by Zimbabweans.

If that can be accomplished, it will be far less likely that another ruler will be able to repeat the injustices that have already occurred.

NEWS: Yahoo! $100K report

Yahoo! News is rarely real news. When I sign into my e-mail account there are always four headlines on the Yahoo! front page. One of the four will be news that matters to the world, while the other three give me kissing tips, a report that I should eat healthier and something about a two headed panda.

I have yet to see the panda headline, but you get the picture that there is never political coverage or international news.

Today when I signed in there was only one real news story, giving readers an update about Hurricane Ike. One of the other headlines still managed to catch my eye.

"The Quickest Route to a Six-Figure Job"

Journalist was not one of them.

If you want to know how to make some coin, see the list at http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/career-articles-the_quickest_route_to_a_six_figure_job-518

I'll make my point quickly-Yahoo! is smart because they have the "news" people want to read. The majority of people would rather learn how to be a good boyfriend than learn about the conflict in Georgia or hear about the newest legislation going through Congress. An important aspect of media is that the media needs an audience, and the "news" Yahoo! reports is for the average American. Too bad the average American doesn't care more.

NEWS: Where is this country going?

NEW YORK

I love it when the media does its job correctly. I've already spoken of the house with smoke and mirrors that is Washington, but some great journalists help people find the answers they need.

You don't need to be an economic genius to recognize this is not a great time for our country. Driving past a gas station, checking your account balance everyday to see how close to red figures you are or even reading a newspaper will tell the story.

Matt Lauer, Ohio University alumnus helped me find the answers in his most recent interview.

John McCain has gone back and forth on the economy, saying we are in crisis but the fundamentals are strong. McCain believes the fundamentals are the American workers, and that they are holding strong.

Obviously American workers are the base of the economy. Without us nothing is made or bought. However, McCain seems to be failing to notice the cracking foundation. The American worker is beginning to scrap for money. They can't afford the gas. They can't afford the new car. They can't afford the new house. They can't afford college.

I don't want to seem bias, I'll admit I am more liberal in my views. However, McCain can only point to 9/11 as the problem and seeks to only make a commission to study 9/11 and report their findings from its effects.

"We are in total crisis," said McCain. "We need a 9/11 commission, and we need a commission to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it."

I cannot believe in a solution to 2008's problems by looking back to 2001, the tragedy it held and find a solution in it. A commission will not only be costly, ineffective but will also take too long. McCain admits, "America is in crisis today." Today needs to be studied, not September 11, 2001.

I can't help but agree with Obama's response. "Senator McCain offered up the oldest Washington stunt in the book - you pass the buck to a commission to study the problem. But here's the thing - this isn't 9/11. We know how we got into this mess. What we need now is leadership that gets us out."

The 9/11 commission proposal will only find how we got into this crisis. It will not get us out. By the time anything will done, the future american worker will be out of the job, out of cash, out of college and America will be out of luck.

POLITICS: What IF firefighters ran the world?

ATHENS

As I was watching the Bungals play football yesterday, I came across a commercial from Sprint. It has firefighters in Congress on their phones taking vote on various issues.

The Budget: All in favor clean water?    I!... done

Streets? Need new streets?    I!... done

If only Washington ran this smooth.

Maybe we should elect our local fire chief, send them to Washington with a direct connect phone and let them get things done. I've always wanted to be a politics columnist, but the fact that politics is nothing more than a mere game in Washington has scared me away from ambitions.

Associating yourself with the dirty 'P' word gives an image of being a sly, corrupt, old white man with money. I've always wondered what goes on in that white building because seldom do I see results. Even when something does get accomplished, it usually takes years because of the convoluted corn maze Washington has become.

So my vote this year goes to Dan Shroyer, Springdale fire chief.

Vote for change! Shroyer 08! He's a firefighter, he'll get things done!

SPORTS: Who dey...? Power of sports press

CINCINNATI

Cincinnati is terrible. Even the press thinks so.

I know its week 2, I know it was windy today, and I know I should be patient. I also know the Cincinnati Bengals are terrible.

The one prayer they had was the offense, and its simply not there. The once explosive Palmer looks like he is playing to stay alive, the WR core doesn't scare defenses and the line isn't much of one. Once the offense fails, our defense stands no chance. They have been consistently bad, and there seems to be little hope for the year.

Since I am already considering selling my Bengals gear on eBay and just wait until February to watch football again, I figure I should focus on something I still have faith in. The media.

Thursday Paul Daugherty, Cincinnati Enquirer columnist wrote of the downward spiraling Bengals. He noted that he hasn't seen fans enraged this much in twenty years and that the enraged fans are now simply throwing in the towel.

As a future journalist, I'm glad to see people reading and responding to such articles. Not everyone will agree with Daugherty, but his valid points open many eyes. He opened the discussion to fans, and got an interesting assortment of opinions.

"The Bengals will be what we've been the last 20 years as long as the Brown family owns them. All that's left to do is pull myself away from the TV and...go outside and enjoy the fall."

"We've been a national punch-line for the bulk of my existence."

"I refuse to look like an idiot any longer."

Sports is an obvious target for media. Teams are made up of over-payed individuals. Entire cities glorify players and find faith in their teams. Sports has a solid presence in our country, as does the media. When they collide, it can get ugly because the truth isn't pretty.

As Daugherty said, "It won't stop. It never does."

SPORTS: You're my boy Boo!

ATHENS

Today was my first OU football game in Athens, and it wasn't too bad. OU took the lead in the first half, only to lose it on a punt return. The Bobcats and their fans seemed to of lost their energy until the 4th quarter when Boo Jackon once again made a huge play out of nothing.

Its Jackson's ability to use his elusiveness to escape defenders and keep plays alive. That kind of excitement revived a dead O-Zone. Thats right, the O-Zone was quieter than bingo night at the retirement home.

As a freshman, there was plenty of hype coming to OU, and how it has the #1 fan section in the MAC. All I saw today was 1/2 a fan zone sitting during the most crucial time, a time in which OU had lost its early momentum and needed something to go their away.

Cheering aside, Jackson brought the Bobcats within a field goal. Momentum swung in favor of OU after a mammoth sack on third down. Jackson led his Bobcats all the way to the one-inch line, where he fumbled the ball reaching out for the end zone.

For all thinking Boo Jackson lost the game, you are wrong. Jackson is the reason fans had something to cheer for, gave OU a chance, stayed in the game even when he was roughed up countless times, and ultimately fumbled because he went for the win rather than a game-tying field goal on the one yard line.

The one thing I can admire in a player is the desire to win. Jackson went for it all, and simply came up short.

POLITICS: Sarah Palin Interview With Charles Gibson

NEW YORK

Journalism veteran Charles Gibson sat down with VP candidate Sarah Palin for a interview that merely only showed her ignorance and inexperience. When asked about the Bush Doctrine*, Palin admitted she hadn't heard about it until yesterday and danced around questions.

Veteran Gibson stuck her in a corner on the doctrine, asked about the Middle East and her comments of the U.S. fulfilling God's will in the Middle East. Of course not recalling her exact quote (as seen below in video), rookie Palin fumbled her answer.

Why the GOP selected a VP candidate that has only been to Mexico and Canada, I will never know. All I know is I can see the 'deer in the headlights' expression on her face, notice her lack of confidence and assume she is not ready to lead this country.

Final score:

Rookie Palin: 0

Veteran Gibson: 1

*Bush Doctrine: Bush's foreign policy post-9/11 attacks. It originally gave the US the right to invade Afghanistan, and allowed for punishment against countries that harbor terrorist or aid terrorists.

NEWS: No prosecution for baby's death

CINCINNATI

Jodie Edwards, former mother to a 11-month old child will not be prosecuted by Hamilton country prosecutor Joe Deters after she left her child in a van for eight hours.

Edwards reportedly dropped her other child off at the day care but "honestly forgot" that she hadn't dropped of her other child. Instead she went straight to work and left the child in the hot van for eight hours. It wasn't until she turned around to back out of the parking lot that she noticed her dead child.

This isn't the first death in Cincinnati due to a parent leaving a child in a van, but this case stands out because of the dropped charges. The more tragic part of the story is that there is still another child in the care of a mother who could not remember her 11-month old child was in the car. When a child is young, they have no control over their life and the sole responsibility of care is with the parents.

Deters claims there is no punishment in Ohio for a parent who has a made an honest mistake. However, I would hope that one's morality would stand in place where the law comes up short. This death is merely a message to parents that if they can prove they didn't purposely kill their children, they shouldn't be punished.

Deters shouldn't allow Edwards to walk away. He should make a stance, and show all that they must cherish and protect the lives of their children.
